EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence based treatment for traumatic stress disorders.  Decades worth of research this treatment. In many cases, it can resolve issues relatively quickly (weeks not months or years as was previously assumed in our field).

The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health.  If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training, Balance clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.

Consultation

In today's climate, creating awareness of mental health challenges and concerns within your organization is vital. Mental health awareness engagements, conversations and training are critical to the health of an organization. Now, more than ever, we can change attitudes and stigmas toward mental health by having open dialogue, supporting one another, and creating cultures where empathetic leadership, help-seeking and self-care are emphasized.

Balance delivers unparalleled access to support for businesses and other organizations, improving culture and impacting performance. We can work with individuals or groups to encourage and promote mental health well-being. We provide education on tools to support someone with a mental health issue, practice hard conversations, and offer resources for support, amongst other things. Client-centered and agile, Balance gives you behavioral health consulting services that comprehensively examine your challenges and recommend actionable strategies

Additionally, If you're a doctor, mental health professional, attorney or other professional and have a client you suspect may have Substance Use Disorder (SUD), we can help.

We can provide a specialized assessment and recommendations to you and your client. In most cases this assessment is covered by private insurance. This service is consultative and will not interfere with your client’s treatment with you in any way.

Pet Therapy

We believe in the capacity of the human/animal bond to bring hope, comfort and healing! Biscuit the pug is a trained Emotional Support Animal who participates in sessions sometimes (when he's not busy napping or eating...). Heather and Biscuit are the best of buddies (seriously, she loves him more than her husband, not really, but kinda... :) and make an excellent team!

Psychological Evaluations

Psychological assessment is often helpful in understanding the strengths and challenges someone may have in their cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. The psychological assessment process allows for diagnostic clarity and individualized recommendations. I am happy to offer psychological testing for adults, as well as children.

Depending on the presenting concerns, the psychological assessment may include several domains including cognitive, academic, career/aptitude, and social-emotional. Testing activities can include a variety of questions and/or puzzles, as well as some school-like tasks like reading, writing and math.

We provide testing for the following concerns:

ADHD Evaluation

PTSD Evaluation

Pre Surgical Bariatric Qualification

Personality Testing for Complex Clinical Cases

Differentiating Substance Induced Mental Illness vs. Organic Illness

Career & Aptitude Testing

Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Evaluations

Addiction Services

The “chicken or the egg” issue is a common question in our work—the misuse of drugs or alcohol may initiate the onset or increase the severity of other mental illnesses, or mental disorders may lead to drug/alcohol use, as people attempt to “self- medicate” to cope with their symptoms.

Multiple national population surveys have found that about half of those who experience a mental illness during their lives will also experience a substance use disorder and vice versa. Our solution is to address the chicken AND the egg! With education and training to understand and treat both issues, we are uniquely positioned to be of maximum service to our clients.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is an approach to treatment where one or two therapists work with a group of clients, usually around 5–10 people, at the same time. Group therapy sessions typically last 60–90 minutes and meet 2-4 times per month. Members share their feelings, experiences, and challenges, and learn from each other. Therapists help members pay attention to important interactions and dynamics that might be easier to notice in a group setting.

Our therapy groups can help people:

Learn to manage anger.

Cope with grief.

Cope with trauma.

Overcome substance related issues.

Develop more constructive coping mechanisms.

Improve social skills.

Improve relationships with others

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How Much Does it Cost?

Health Care plans set rates according to their own policies and procedures. To put it simply, the insurance companies determine the fee schedule, not your counselor. Each carrier has different rates they reimburse for mental health services. We do our best to work with your insurance plan to help cover costs. However, there are hundreds of different insurance plans and we strongly encourage clients to call their insurance company and ask about their benefits for mental health, sometimes called behavioral health or psychotherapy. Be sure to ask about the deductible and copay, some require these to be met and others do not. You can find a customer service phone number on the backside of your insurance card.

If you have health insurance through work or the ACA/Obamacare (Ambetter or BCBS), it will most likely cover all or part your treatment. Finding exactly what coverage you have can be complex and confusing. Give us a call and we will gladly find out the details making it easier for you to focus on getting better.

  • Does It Work?

In the late nineteenth century, Sigmund Freud, one of the pioneers of clinical psychology coined the term "talking cure" to describe the first clinical use of counseling. Freud noticed that when the patient was relaxed and able to talk freely, in a confidential and non judgmental environment, they got relief from their distress. His style of treatment focused on becoming aware of past traumas that were thought to be causing the person's current distress. This was the genesis of counseling as we know it today.

Honestly, it's hard to say exactly how counseling works, but we know it does! We've been privileged to see people recover from significant distress with the help of counseling.  The idea is that there is a profound connection between the mind, the heart, and open self expression within a therapeutic relationship. The process affords the client the opportunity to have a "corrective emotional experience."

The effectiveness of psychotherapy generally relies on two major factors: the willingness of the patient to participate and the quality of the therautic relationship.

  • How long are the counseling sessions themselves? How often are they held?

Typically, we will meet face to face for 45 to 55 minutes, depending on the situation. You may also spend 5-10 minutes checking in and filling out short questionnaires. All told, on average, you'll spend about an hour at the office each time you come for a session.

  • How long will counseling last?

The length of counseling is quite variable, and the final decision regarding the length of counseling rests jointly between you and your counselor. Some folks stay for as short a time as two or three sessions, while others are in counseling for a year or more as they continue to pursue goals and practice skills. Typically, the time in counseling is somewhere in between.

Regardless of the length of treatment, a final session is important so we can summarize the work that has been done in counseling and say "good-bye." This resolution is associated with better long-term outcomes when compared with an abrupt termination of services.

Many of our clients choose to have "booster sessions" after regular counseling sessions have ended. For example, you may have had 16 weekly sessions and decide that is sufficient. You might call for a follow-up session several months or even years after weekly sessions have ended. These booster sessions serve as a sort of “tune-up” to help you stay on track and continue to use the skills you learned in counseling.

  • Is it really confidential?

Absolutely. What's discussed in counseling sessions is confidential, as is information that someone is meeting with a counselor. We only share private and confidential information either with the client’s written permission or in extremely rare exceptions when the safety of a client or someone else is at risk.

  • I’m unsure I need your services. Do you offer free consultations?

We offer free consultations over the phone to help you better understand what services might be a good fit for your needs and how we can best help you to live better. We are happy to speak with you on the phone about your needs and answer any questions you may have before making your first appointment. Please call us at 501.303.6108.
